Sector: American diner
Details: The UK's largest airport restaurant
Location: London Luton Airport
Sanfords, operated by The Restaurant Group, is located in London Luton Airport. The airport has a strong focus on hospitality, offering hotels nearby and a wide range of cafes, bars and lounges airside and Sanfords fits in perfectly.
The former Frankie & Benny’s site has undergone a full renovation and extension to create Sanfords. This modern American style diner now features a newly constructed mezzanine floor housing the Loft Bar, with the Diner located on the floor below.
On opening day, Sanfords was named the largest airport restaurant in the UK. With 480 seats available, customers can enjoy an all day menu, cocktail bar and shuffleboard before take off.
"This was a truly unique project and I was delighted to see the transformation that was achieved from lots of hard work and strong collaboration. This is certainly a project to remember!"
Oliver Andrews, Project Manager at Chapman Ventilation Ltd
London Luton Airport opened in 1938 and has grown from a small municipal airport into one of the UK’s busiest travel hubs. Following wartime use, the airport expanded rapidly in the post‑war years and played a significant role in the package holiday boom of the late 1960s. Today, Luton serves millions of passengers annually through a single modern terminal. Located approximately 30 miles north of central London, it benefits from excellent transport links, including fast rail connections to London, direct access to the M1 and motorway and frequent bus and coach services.
Sanfords is a landmark hospitality build, recognised as the largest restaurant within any UK airport. The venue spans approximately 1,190 sq m (12,800 sq ft), accommodates 480 covers, and is located airside within the departure lounge.
A key feature of the build was the creation of a bespoke mezzanine floor, delivering a two-level concept comprising an American-style diner on the lower level and a loft bar above.
The project took around two years from concept to completion. As the terminal remained fully operational throughout, this project wasn’t without some turbulance.
However, despite logistical and security challenges, our Project Managers delivered effective ventilation and extract systems safely and successfully within a live airport environment.
Well done to all of the members of our team who were involved with this complex but rewarding project. This site required truly collaborative working and creative thinking and we did it well.
