Five Guys

Sector: Hospitality - Quick Service Restaurant
Details: Full installation and project management
Location: Enfield, London

In 1986, Jerry and Janie Murrell gave their four sons an ultimatum: “Go to college or start a business”. Thirty years later, Five Guys is now an internationally renowned burger chain, with over 1,000 sites in the US and thousands more across the globe. It all started with a simple offering: hand-formed prime beef burgers grilled to perfection and served with fresh-cut fries cooked in pure peanut oil. Since then, this offering hasn’t changed. Five Guys continues to serve its trademark burgers and fries and have built up a huge following.

"We're incredibly proud of our long-standing relationship with Five Guys. This new site is an excellent addition to Southbury Leisure Park."

Martin Burrows-Gee, Project Manager at Chapman Ventilation

The Beginnings

We have a long standing relationship with Five Guys – we’ve manufactured and installed the ventilation for all of their UK sites, as well as working with them on European expansion. They first opened in the UK in Covent Garden in July 2013. For six months prior to the launch, we had been pilot testing our systems and running regular live cooking demonstrations with their team at our test kitchen facility in Welwyn Garden City.

This extensive history installing HVAC systems in Five Guys restaurants meant we were able to work to a tight deadline on the Enfield site. Located in a stand-alone unit on a retail park, the site is unusual in having a full back-to-back two kitchen run. This will no doubt be hugely useful in catering for the huge delivery market we’ve seen booming through the pandemic. We also used our on-site manufacturing facility to produce bespoke metal fabrications for the site – from burger presses to integrated sink units.

High Five, Guys!

The Enfield site is fitted with a bespoke CCA (Canopy Containment Air) technology hood: a high-performance and efficient piece of equipment designed to prevent the spread of smoke, odour and convective heat across the kitchen. This helps to create a comfortable kitchen environment for chefs and customers alike. The extract system is also an integral part of the restaurant’s design scheme; the ductwork is powder-coated in the signature Five Guys bright red. This is a feature we’ve been providing for Five Guys for many years, and love working on – it’s always exciting when a client chooses to make a feature of our work.

The project was completed on time and within budget. It’s been a pleasure to work with Five Guys once again and we’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with the brand – especially when it involves sampling Five Guys burgers in our test kitchen!
