The Alchemist

Sector: Hospitality
Details: 6,500 square feet
Location: 11 King Street, Nottingham, NG1 2

The Alchemist, the Palatine Private Equity-backed bar and restaurant concept, has opened its first site in the East Midlands on Friday 9th February. The 13th site from The Alchemist took over the former Hard Rock Café site on Kings Street, Nottingham City Centre. It overlooks the Old Market Square and the Brian Clough Statue – an English football player and manager. The 6,500 sq. ft restaurant with 120-covers undertook a £1.6m makeover and is designed to follow the chain’s trademark copper-cased wonderland décor featuring red and copper interior and unique artwork. The Alchemist is set for further growth in 2018 after securing an additional £16m finance package.

"The Alchemist in Nottingham is a great addition to the city. Nottingham is an exciting place with a thriving bar scene and this new bar will fit right in. The cocktails are all so innovative and there is something for everyone on the food menu."

Robyn Moody, Project Manager at Chapman Ventilation

Molecular Mixology

The Alchemist specialises in a range of cocktails celebrating molecular mixology and alchemy – bringing science and alcohol together. The drinks menu offers more than 50 cocktails containing a range of ingredients that are served with flames, bubbles and smoke. The menu covers everything from Thai, Indian, Cajun to Japanese and American classics. It also offers a breakfast menu served until midday which features: halloumi and avocado muffins; smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and shakshuka (poached eggs with tomato, chilli, peppers and onions).

The Alchemist, Nottingham

The two-storey Grade II listed building was built between 1880 – 1890 and was originally designed by Alfred Water – the designer of the Natural History Museum. Overall the site took thirteen weeks to complete and we handed over on 29th January 2018. As the project build took place over the festive period and Nottingham’s popular Christmas market was located near to the site, we were unable to use a crane lift to carry out any works. The decommissioning and installation of a new roof plant area was completed using just man-power. We also had the job of updating an existing Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system which controlled the whole building and converted it into a new system that individually controlled The Alchemist site. Project Manager Robyn Moody and the team had to revamp the existing kitchen extract ductwork to ensure that it conformed to building regulations and requirements and used eco-seal to prevent the ductwork from leaking.
